Our schoolyard co-design approach fosters the collaborative creation of nature-based, accessible, and inclusive spaces by actively involving children at every stage, from initial design to ongoing maintenance. The method encompasses a wide range of activities, including child-focused surveys and workshops that explore and document the existing schoolyard environment, such as local biodiversity. We also facilitate hands-on co-design activities—like collages, architectural drawings, and physical models—that empower participants to express their needs and aspirations for everyday spaces, contributing directly to the final design.
Most importantly, by engaging children into a meaningful and inclusive evaluation of the current situation and future designs of their schoolyard, our method ensures places that not only thrive but also foster a sense of ownership and stewardship among the younger generation, resulting into successful schoolyards. Our overarching vision is to empower young citizens to take an active role in shaping climate-resilient futures for their places and cities.
