We have designed and constructed at Spitodentro kindergarten in Thessaloniki a natural schoolyard that transforms outdoor play into an enriching, nature-based experience. Built with natural materials such as wood, soil, and gravel, the space provides young children with opportunities for free exploration, imaginative play, and meaningful interaction with their environment.

The design introduces a small wooden tree-house to encourage role play, alongside an area with soil that allows children to dig, build, and experiment freely, stimulating both sensory discovery and creativity. On the opposite side of the schoolyard, a wooden bench placed under the shade of existing trees creates a calm gathering area, while gravel surfaces ensure durability and safe movement. A new connection between previously separated areas of the yard further enhances accessibility and variety of play.

On the opposite side of the schoolyard, a wooden bench placed under the shade of existing trees creates a calm and welcoming gathering area, not only for children, but also for educators and staff seeking a quiet outdoor space during the day. The shaded spot can further accommodate family days and school events, offering parents and visitors a comfortable place to gather and connect within the kindergarten’s natural environment .

This natural schoolyard fosters holistic child development by supporting psychomotor skills, imagination, and social interaction, while also offering daily contact with nature. Through thoughtful design, it provides a healthier, more welcoming microclimate and nurtures early bonds between children and their environment, supporting children's wellbeing, curiosity, and cultivating their connection with nature.
